Weird News: A 15 Story Hotel in 6 Days

A construction crew in the Chinese city of Changsha has constructed a 15-story hotel in just six days.

Yes!! Six days. That’s how long it took to build this level 9 Earthquake-resistant, sound-proofed, thermal-insulated 15-story hotel in Changsha, complete with everything, from the cabling to three-pane windows. The foundations were already built, but it’s just impressive.

Fact: Like a Diamond in the Sky

Glittering stars in the night sky aside, scientists have long known that some diamonds hail from the heavens. In 1981, for example, when Smithsonian researchers tried to cut through a large iron meteorite that had crash-landed in the Allen Hills of Antarctica, the sawteeth on their blade got all chewed up. Subsequent X-rays showed that the stone was riddled with microscopic diamonds, the hardest substance known. The scientists theorized that the meteorite’s diamonds were born during a cataclysmic collision out in the asteroid belt.

Other meteoric diamonds apparently hail from deep space. In 1987, a team of researchers headed by Edward Anders and Roy Lewis of the University of Chicago reported the discovery of meteorite-embedded diamonds so miniscule that trillions could fit on the head of a pin. Unlike the Smithsonian diamonds, these microscopic crystals contain an isotopic mixture of xenon gas not found on Earth. “It seems necessary to invoke an extra-solar origin for the diamond,” the scientists concluded in a paper published in Nature, indicating a birth outside our solar system.

Weird news: Stealing Cars Through Wireless Ignition

It’s no surprise to me (and hopefully no surprise to you), that researchers have discovered a method to break into and steal cars that use wireless entry and ignition.

The researchers tested a few scenarios and found out that an attacker could watch a parking lot and have an accomplice watch as car owners as entered a nearby store. The accomplice would only need to be within eight meters of the targeted owner’s key fob, making it easy to avoid arousing suspicion.

In another scenario, a car owner might leave a car key on a table near a window. An antenna placed outside the house was able to communicate with the key, allowing the researchers then to start the car parked out front and drive away.

Auto Security Companies need to stop with this high-tech gadgetry until they commit to hiring brilliant security experts to design these systems for them. Even then, using simple wireless radio transmissions that any regular joe can produce with less than Rs 5000 of equipment is just a bad idea.
